COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SPECTACLES, INDUSTRIAL
(METAL FRAMES)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal Specification GGG-S-620, type I, styles A, B, C, and D.
This description covers spectacle for the protection of personnel engaged in occupations where small flying particles of relatively light impact are encountered; such as in light grinding and polishing metal and wood burning, and drilling. In addition, spectacles with absorptive lenses provide protection from the harmful effects of intense light in the vicinity of gas or electric welding and other sources of intense glare. Spectacle frames and lenses shall be one of the following types, styles and classes.
Frames:
Metal
Style A – without side shields
Style B – with wire side shields
Style C – with perforated clear plastic side shields
Style D – with green plastic side shields
Lenses:
Type I – Glass, plano, impact-resistant.
Class A – clear
Class B – absorptive. Shall be available in shade numbers 1.7, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0, as specified.
Type II – Polycarbonate, plano, impact-resistant, mar-resistant coated.
Class A – clear
Class B – absorptive. Shall be available in shade numbers 1.7, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0, as specified.
Salient characteristics:
Lens – S-7
Lens Sizes – 44, 46, 48, 50 mm, as specified. A tolerance of + 0.1 mm applies
Frame Sizes – 44, 46, 48, 50 mm, as specified, Shall accommodate S-7 lenses.
Glare Protection – Side shields used in Class B lens spectacles when used to enhance glare protection, shall have transmission to incident radiation (visible, ultra-violet and infrared) less than or equal to the lens in front. Side shields shall be solid with no perforations or openings.
Bridge Sizes - From 18 to 26 mm, as specified. A tolerance of + 1.0 mm is permitted.
Temples - Shall be cable or spatula type, as specified.
Nose Pads - Shall be equipped with adjustable rocking-pad type, or an integral, rigid pad. A universal fitting bridge may be furnished,
Conformance. Spectacles and lenses furnished under this specification shall comply with the applicable requirements of ANSI Z 87.1, except as otherwise specified herein.
Workmanship. The spectacles shall be constructed in a thoroughly workmanlike manner, and shall be free of defects which may impair their appearance, durability, or serviceability.
Note. Purchaser to specify type, class, style, lens size, frame size, bridge size, and whether tempIes are to be cable or spatula type.
