HELMET AND HANDHELD SHIELD, WELDER’S
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description by all Federal agencies.
1. SCOPE
1.1 Scope. This CID covers welding helmets and handheld shields, with impact and welding plates.
2. CLASSIFICATION
2.1 Classification. The welding helmets and handheld shields shall be of the following types:
Type 1 - Welding helmet.
Type 2 - Handheld shield.
3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
3.1 Industrial standards compliance. All helmets, handheld shields, and plates shall meet all the applicable requirements of ANSI Z87.1, and be labeled as required.
3.2 Welding Helmet, type 1. The type 1 helmet shall have a shell, a lift front plate holder, and a pivoting headgear system that supports the helmet on the wearers head. The helmet shall include the following plates: A clear cover plate and a Shade Number 10 safety plate in the lift front plate holder, and a clear impact plate that remains in place to protect the eyes when the lift front is raised. The lift front shall stay in the lifted position when released. The welding helmet shall be configured similar to figure 1 and shall be designed to completely shield the front of the user’s head from above the forehead to below the chin when in the down position. If the headgear does not support the helmet in the down position, the helmet shall have a chin rest properly placed on the inside. The shell of the helmet shall be opaque. The headgear shall comfortably support the helmet on the wearer’s head and allow the helmet to be tilted back over the head, holding it there. As a minimum the headband shall have an adjustment range of hat size 6-1/2 to 8 in increments of 1/4 or smaller hat size. The front portion of the headband shall be covered with a removable sweatband. The sweatband shall be a material which is non-irritating and non-allergenic.
