3.3 Handheld shield, Type 2. The type 2 handheld shields shall be complete with a shell, a stationary plate holder, a handle, a clear cover plate, and a Shade number 10 safety plate. The handheld shield shall be configured similar to figure 2 and shall completely shield the front of the user’s head from above the forehead to below the chin when held in place. The handheld shield shell shall be opaque.
3.3.1 Handle. The handle shall be firmly and securely fastened to the lower part of the handheld shield and shall be made of a thermally nonconductive material. The handle shall be round or oval shaped, 1/2 Inch (1.3 cm) minimum m diameter, and extend 6 inches (15.2 cm) minimum below the lower part of the shield.
3.4 Weight. The helmet or handheld shield, including headgear or handle, not including any plates, shall weigh no more than 2 pounds (0.9 kg).
3.5 Plate retention. The plates shall be positively retained in the holder. All slack and looseness shall be positively eliminated by a mechanism which restrains movement of the plates within the holder and uniformly loads the plates toward the front of the holder.
3.6 Hardware. Any metal parts, including rivets, which extend through the shell of the helmet shall not be exposed on the inside of the helmet. Such metal parts shall be insulated by permanent non-conductive insulation which completely covers the metallic parts.
