6. NOTES
(This section contains information of a general or explanatory nature that may be helpful, but
is not mandatory.)
6.1 Intended use. The gas filter covered by this specification is intended to be used in air
purifiers that are part of gas --- particulate filter units in military vehicles such as the Multiple
Launch Rocket System.
6.2 Acquisition requirements. Acquisition documents should specify the following:
(a) Title, number, and date of this specification
(b) First article:
(1) Time allowed for contractor submission of samples for Government test and
evaluation after award of contract when testing is performed by the Government.
(2) Name and address of test facility and shipping instructions when testing is per-
formed by the Government.
(3) Time required for the Government to notify the contractor whether or not to pro-
ceed with production.
(c) Packaging requirements. See Special Packaging Instruction P5 --- 19 --- 2298.
(d) Additional identification or marking requirements, if required, should be in the con-
tract.
6.3 Manufacture (see 3.2). The following method of manufacture has been found to pro-
duce a satisfactory gas filter and is provided for information only. The Government makes no
warranty that material made in accordance with this method will pass the specification require-
ments.
(a) A filter frame with the bottom performated sheet, fines filter and drawbolt assemblies
should be placed in a suitable gravity type filling machine.
(b) A measured amount of carbon conforming to MIL --- DTL --- 32101 should be dumped
rapidly in the hopper of a specially designed gravity filling machine. The carbon should be swept
over the surfaces of the distributing funnels. The funnel outlets should be of a size that will not let
the sorbent fall into the filter frame in less than 1 --- 1/2 minutes. Six inches below the funnel out-
lets, a series of three 4 mesh screens are spaced two inches apart for spreading the sorbent as it
falls into the filter frame. The funnels are spaced so that an excess of carbon is deposited near the
edge of the filter frame for redistribution into the aluminum channel later. The distance between
the funnel outlets and filter frame should be 36 inches. It is advisable to predetermine exper-
imentally the required amount of charcoal to fill a frame.
